With the beginning of the 14th until the 20th century the municipality of Zwickau benefited from mining. At first the silver mining in the district surrounding Schneeberg, a town 20 kilometers away, was important for the development of Zwickau; since the 19th century the industrial coal mining became increasingly significant.
